Roof installation results in a lot of waste material that needs to be cleaned up. It’s natural for homeowners to assume that their roofer will handle post-installation cleanup, but this isn’t always the case.
Not All Roofers Clean Up After Themselves
The most pertinent reason why you should ask your roofer is also the simplest: not all roofers clean up after installation is done. When consulting with potential roofers, make it a point to ask whether they will conduct the after-installation cleanup or if you will have to make arrangements yourself.
Roofers who clean up after themselves are, of course, ideal. Well-organized roofers can remove debris as they install the new roof. Whatever the case may be, it should be clearly indicated in your roofing contract, along with corresponding cost differences.
Items That Should Be Included
The following areas need to be thoroughly cleaned after roofing installation is completed:
Fasteners – Expect a lot of roofing nails on the ground after the old roof is removed, but they should all be gone after installation is complete. A large electromagnet is usually swept over the yard and adjacent areas to make sure all nails are removed. Metal fasteners are ideally sent to metal recycling facilities instead of landfills.
Sheet metal – Discarded sheet metal from an old metal roof is fully recyclable. Like metal fasteners, it should be hauled off and sent to appropriate recycling facilities.
Asphalt shingles – Asphalt is one of the few materials that can be recycled an infinite number of times without degrading. If your roofer doesn’t already have an arrangement with one, you can reach out to a local shingle recycling center for proper disposal.
